 Hi I'm Naaz the People Advisor at HowNow 👋🏾 I’m looking for a API Developer (Ruby on Rails)to join us.

We are looking for a skilled API Developer with strong expertise in Ruby on Rails and a deep understanding of API design and implementation. The ideal candidate will be responsible for building, optimising, and maintaining scalable APIs while ensuring security, performance, and reliability.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs using Ruby on Rails.
• Implement core API features including authentication, authorisation, throttling, caching, logging, and monitoring.
• Ensure APIs are scalable, secure, and follow best practices in design and documentation.
• Integrate APIs with internal and external systems, ensuring high performance and reliability.
• Collaborate with product managers and other backend developers to deliver end-to-end solutions.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and optimise APIs for performance and scalability.
• Contribute to code reviews, technical design discussions, and architecture improvements.

Required Skills & Experience

• Strong proficiency in Ruby on Rails with proven API development experience.
• Solid understanding of API fundamentals — authentication, rate limiting/throttling, request validation, versioning, and error handling.
• Hands-on experience with at least one API Gateway (Kong, Apigee, or equivalent).
• Knowledge of RESTful best practices, OpenAPI/Swagger, and API documentation tools.
• Experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and ORM frameworks.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
• Strong debugging, optimisation, and problem-solving skills.
• Good communication and collaboration skills.
